RAPCON visited the Maryland Air Museum at Martin State AP in May 2010. We arrived to find the museum closed but were fortunate to meet Bill Murphy whose enthusiasm was infectious! He kept us enthralled with his local knowledge of the airport, the museum and the achievements of a being legendary American aviator.
Martin State Airport is named after one of the pioneers of powered aviation, Glenn L Martin. In 1928, he established an aircraft production facility in Middle River, Maryland and the Maryland Aviation Museum is dedicated to him. The Martin Aircraft Corporation built, among others, the B-26, B-57 ‘Canberra’ and P5M Mauler as well as passenger airliners. In 1995, Martin Corporation merged with Lockheed Corporation.
The Museum Collection includes two examples of the Martin RB-57. Our grateful thanks go to Bill for all his help.
